Program Description

Metro South Adult Basic Education provides educational programming to adults. Classes include GED, Adult Diploma, Career Pathways, College Prep, ESL,  & Family Literacy for the cities Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Richfield.

Site History and Mission

Metro South Adult Basic Education (MSABE) has been providing ABE programming, which includes GED, Adult Diploma, Career Pathways, College Prep, ESL,  and Family Literacy classes in the communities of Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Richfield for over five decades. One of the largest ABE consortium programs in Minnesota, MSABE has between 1,800 and 2,000 students accessing services yearly. MSABE functions as a bridge, connecting adult learners to important next steps in life. These include new or better jobs, expanded careers, further education, and improved family and community engagement. MSABE has worked hard to create programming that meets both the immediate and future goals of our students. Our programming helps students plan their education while at MSABE, and as they move into the workforce or seek postsecondary opportunities.

Specific Site Responsibilities

The CTEP service member(s) at MSABE will be serving both English language learners and native English speakers.  These students may be enrolled in ESL, Adult Diploma, GED, College Prep, or Career Pathway classes. Many of our ESL students will likely be learning beginning computer and digital literacy skills. These students will be working towards certification in one or more of the Northstar Digital Literacy Skills.  Our Adult Diploma, GED, College Prep, and Career Pathways students will be working towards certification in many of the 14 Northstar Digital Literacy Skill assessments as required for graduation. Metro South is currently a sponsor site and is eligible to offer these tests in a proctored environment.

For our program, it would be helpful for the CTEP service member(s) to have prior experience working with a culturally diverse adult population, good interpersonal communication skills, and strong organizational skills.  In addition, experience with lesson planning and instruction and knowledge of a foreign language and/or experience living abroad is preferred.

Site Environment

Metro South ABE has two campuses. Our main campus is in Bloomington at our Community Education Center where we offer morning classes, evening classes and Saturday classes. Our other campus is in Eden Prairie at Hennepin Technical College where we offer morning classes and evening classes.

Metro South’s main campus consists of a main office, classrooms, and three Mac computer labs (one is stationary and two are mobile). We also have three carts of Chromebooks that allow students to work online without having to leave their classrooms. The CTEP service member would be housed in a cubicle within the main office and work in classrooms and the computer lab(s) with teachers and students. Metro South ABE students come from a variety of cultural, emotional, economic and educational backgrounds. View the student gallery.

Preferred Site Schedule for Member

The CTEP service member(s) will work with students and teachers at MSABE four days each week. Fridays can be reserved for research, planning, and CTEP trainings. The CTEP member would serve hours at the Bloomington and Eden Prairie locations, mostly during daytime hours. There may be occasional evening or weekend opportunities if the CTEP member’s schedule allows.

In addition, members attend professional development days with their fellow CTEP members to enhance service-readiness skills, personal attributes at the service site, and citizenship skills. These Corps days take place twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Fridays from 9 AM to 4 PM, and these trainings are mandatory. Members also attend statewide AmeriCorps events, such as the Martin Luther King Day celebration, and/or serve on the statewide InterCorps Council.
