Moundsview Music

This spring a group of three CTEP members worked with an art teacher, Sally Gibson, at the Moundsview Area Learning Center (ALC) to organize a music creation class.The ALC does not have any music classes normally, so Sally was very excited when our group memberCassidyTinnin reached out to her to propose the idea. After we had created lesson plans, we started coming to the ALC on a weekly basis to run the class. We taught the class with components focusing on musical basics like scales, basic piano skills, and how to keep time in music. From there, we transitioned into songwriting skills, and then technical production. Many of our students collaborated on tracks, learning how to work together artistically, and growing the musical community at the ALC as well. By the end of the semester, a good portion of our students had created full pieces using the skills they had learned. Several of these were played at their graduation ceremony, which we were lucky to attend. Several of our students are considering pursuing careers in music and learned new techniques for music production and sound engineering in our class. Hopefully these tools will provide a good base for these students to build off of in their future ventures.

Each year our 35 CTEP AmeriCorps members choose community action projects that make a contribution to bridging the digital divide. The CTEP civic engagement projects are often cited by CTEP AmeriCorps members, staff, supervisors, and community supporters as one of the most unique and energizing parts of the program. This is one of the 2019 civic engagement projects.
