Site History and Mission
EMERGE is a community and workforce development organization based in North Minneapolis and Cedar Riverside, neighborhoods that struggle with some of the metro area’s highest rates of unemployment and most concentrated poverty. In 2019, more than 2,300 adults and youth from our communities accessed jobs, financial coaching, supportive housing, and other key services through EMERGE.
EMERGE's mission is "to reveal the potential in people and communities through skill building, employment, and economic opportunity." This reflects both our commitment to facilitate life change for individuals facing significant obstacles, and our commitment to create broader, systemic change at the community level.
Of those served by EMERGE during 2019, 95% identified as people of color with the largest groups served African American (59%) and African (23%) primarily Somali. Our participants are 91% low-income with 76% under the poverty-line. Last year, 59% were receiving some form of public assistance; 35% were overcoming a criminal background; 33% report no high school diploma or GED; 17% speak a primary language other than English; 9% shared they are struggling with a disabling condition; and 10% identified as an immigrant or refugee.
In 2017, we opened Cedar-Riverside Opportunity Center in partnership with the city, county, local colleges, and other partners.
