The Youth Action Committee's Mission is to:
- Ensure a youth voice at SPNN
- Increase youth involvement and opportunities at SPNN
- Develop youth leaders
- Raise awareness of broader youth media and community issues

On a rainy but warm June day, SPNN Youth Programs staff and youth participants, gathered together for the first annual SPNN Youth Retreat. The goal for the retreat was to reflect on experiences over the past year, and talk about goals for the future.
We focused on three areas: integrating new technologies onto our programs, developing youth leadership and voice, and increasing social engagement and visibility. Within these goals, we brainstormed ways we could improve all of these areas. Visibility was identified as a top priority; attendees came up with many creative ideas to get the word out about our programs and the awesome media that youth are producing.
The next step is for staff and YAC (Youth Action Committee) members to prioritize and create an implementation plan for these ideas over the upcoming two years. All in all, we had a great time as an inter-generational team of staff and youth - getting wet, eating yummy food, sharing stories, and working together to envision the future.
YAC has been busy this past month interviewing potential CTEP Americorps members for the Set It Up Assistant Coordinator position. It is important for youth to have a voice in the hiring process, as the CTEP Americorps member work closely with the Set It Up crew. YAC developed interview questions, and conducted two interviews – one in person, and one via Skype. Then, YAC members discussed the two interviewees and gave feedback to the Youth Programs Director. One of the applicants was offered and accepted the position. This fall, Sara Torres, a soon-to-be graduate from Macalester College, will be the new Set It Up Assistant Coordinator! We look forward to welcoming her into the SPNN Youth family.

Youth Action Committee meets every other Tuesday from 5-7pm (dinner provided) to plan community screenings and promote youth media. If you are or have been a part of SPNN programs in the past and want to get your media seen and heard, Come to YAC!
